Libertyville, IL – The Libertyville Police Department issued a safety advisory on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, warning residents about the growing prevalence of ruse burglaries. These crimes involve offenders using distraction or deception to gain access to private residences to steal valuables.
According to the Libertyville Police Department , these burglaries often involve two individuals working in tandem. While one person creates a distraction for the homeowner, the second person enters the residence unnoticed. Common tactics used by offenders include posing as municipal employees, utility workers inspecting water or gas lines, or contractors offering services such as roofing, sealcoating, or driveway repair.
To protect against these schemes, the police suggest that residents always demand proper identification before allowing anyone onto their property. Homeowners should never leave their doors unlocked or unattended while speaking with strangers. If a visitor requests access to a phone or help with an emergency, residents should offer to call 911 on their behalf rather than handing over devices or letting the individual inside.
Authorities also emphasize the importance of checking on elderly neighbors and family members who may be targeted by such scams. If any suspicious activity is observed, residents are encouraged to note vehicle descriptions, including license plate numbers, and contact the police immediately. Trusting your instincts is the most effective defense, as officials remind citizens that if a situation feels wrong, they should refuse entry to the visitor.
