Lane County, OR – Authorities successfully located two individuals who had gone missing in the remote Cape Creek area during a mushroom picking excursion. The search operation, led by the Lane County Sheriff 's Office LCSO and supported by Search and Rescue SAR volunteers, concluded successfully on Friday, September 11, 2026, when both subjects were found safe and uninjured.
According to the LCSO, the incident began on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at approximately 11:00 p.m., when officials received a report regarding an overdue individual. A woman reported that she had dropped off a male companion to forage for mushrooms, but upon returning to the designated pickup location, she was unable to locate him. The man, who was accompanied by a puppy, reportedly lacked necessary provisions for an overnight stay in the wilderness.
Deputies and SAR teams were immediately dispatched to the area, though efforts were complicated by notoriously patchy cellular service. The search continued through the following morning, and at approximately 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 11, 2026, rescue teams discovered the male subject and the puppy near the woman’s vehicle. However, the woman was not with the vehicle, having left a note indicating she was still searching for her companion.
Search efforts remained focused on the surrounding terrain until approximately 3:20 p.m. on Friday, September 11, 2026, when drones successfully located the woman. Both individuals were found to be in good health. The LCSO utilized this incident as a reminder to the public about the importance of backcountry safety, emphasizing the need for reliable communication plans and proper preparation when exploring Oregon's rugged landscapes.
