Lake Station, IN – Drivers traveling Interstate 94 through Northwest Indiana should prepare for significant overnight traffic disruptions next week as bridge construction brings lane reductions, road closures and expected delays in Lake County.
According to the Indiana Department of Transportation INDOT , overnight restrictions are scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 3, through Friday morning, Nov. 6, as crews install bridge beams for the southbound U.S. 6/State Road 51 bridge over I 94.
Construction will affect I 94 between Central Avenue and State Road 249, with restrictions scheduled from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. on two separate nights.
Westbound I 94 will be impacted first, beginning Tuesday evening, Nov. 3, and continuing through Wednesday morning, Nov. 4.
Eastbound I 94 restrictions will follow Thursday evening, Nov. 5, through Friday morning, Nov. 6.
During both overnight construction periods, I 94 traffic will be reduced to one lane. Motorists will be directed onto the ramps at U.S. 6/State Road 51 to continue traveling eastbound or westbound around the bridge work.
Additionally, U.S. 6/State Road 51 will be completely closed between Central Avenue and U.S. 20 , with no access to I 94 from that roadway during the scheduled restrictions.
Drivers traveling between Lake Station, Gary, Portage and surrounding Northwest Indiana communities should anticipate heavier congestion and consider alternate routes.
The restrictions could also affect motorists traveling through the region toward Chicago, particularly those using I 94 during evening and early morning hours.
INDOT is warning drivers to expect heavy overnight delays, follow posted traffic directions and allow additional travel time.
The construction schedule remains weather dependent and could change.
Motorists are encouraged to monitor INDOT traffic updates before traveling through the affected corridor.
