Lake County, IN – Drivers traveling through northwest Indiana should prepare for significant overnight traffic restrictions Thursday, Nov. 5, as construction crews continue bridge work at Interstate 94 and U.S. 6/State Road 51.
According to the Indiana Department of Transportation's Northwest District, bridge beams have successfully been installed over the westbound lanes of I 94 following an extended construction delay caused by engineering issues.
Crews are now preparing to install beams over the eastbound side, requiring temporary road closures and lane restrictions beginning Thursday evening.
I 94 Reduced to One Lane Overnight
The next phase of construction is scheduled from 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, until approximately 7 a.m. Friday, Nov. 6.
During this period, I 94 will be reduced to one lane through the construction area.
INDOT said eastbound traffic will use ramps at U.S. 6/State Road 51 to travel around the bridge work zone before continuing eastbound.
Drivers should expect delays, particularly as traffic merges into the restricted travel lane.
US 6 and State Road 51 Closure Planned
U.S. 6/State Road 51 will be closed between Central Avenue and U.S. 20 throughout the overnight construction period.
Motorists will also be unable to access I 94 from U.S. 6/State Road 51 during the closure.
INDOT is encouraging drivers to seek alternate routes and allow additional travel time.
Bridge Project Resumes After Engineering Delays
The department confirmed that the project has resumed after construction was previously halted for an extended period because of engineering concerns.
The successful installation of westbound bridge beams marks an important milestone, with eastbound installation representing the next major step.
Motorists traveling through Lake County and surrounding northwest Indiana communities should remain alert for construction equipment, lane shifts and changing traffic patterns.
INDOT advises drivers to follow posted traffic directions and exercise caution near the overnight work zone.
