KENOSHA COUNTY, WI – A visit to a popular fall attraction in southeastern Wisconsin turned into a police investigation after witnesses reported seeing a juvenile carrying a handgun inside a corn maze at Jerry Smith Pumpkin Farm.
According to the Kenosha County Sheriff 's Office, deputies responded to the farm at 7150 18th St. around 8:03 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, after witnesses alerted farm employees about the firearm.
Farm security personnel approached the juvenile, who allegedly fled through the corn maze before being detained by security as he attempted to leave the property.
Deputies took the juvenile into custody upon arrival. During the investigation, he acknowledged possessing the handgun and told investigators he had discarded it inside the maze while fleeing.
Farm employees cleared the corn maze as Deputy Booth and his K9 partner, Riv, searched for the weapon.
Riv tracked the juvenile's route through the corn stalks and located an empty 30 round magazine. Minutes later, the K9 discovered a handgun nearby.
Authorities identified the recovered weapon as an unloaded 9 mm handgun. The magazine contained no ammunition.
Deputies also recovered a vape pen belonging to the juvenile. A field test indicated the presence of THC.
The Sheriff's Office announced Monday, Oct. 12, that it had requested charges of disorderly conduct while armed, possession of a dangerous weapon by a person under 18, and possession of THC.
At the direction of Kenosha County Juvenile Court Intake, the juvenile was released to a parent with housing restrictions. His identity has not been released because of his age.
Sheriff David Zoerner credited witnesses, farm security, deputies and K9 Riv for helping recover the firearm before it could be accessed by others.
The incident remains under investigation. Authorities have not announced additional details.
