Kansas City Under Extreme Heat Warning Through Tonight

Kansas City, MO – Residents in the Kansas City metro region are facing a period of intense heat as officials issued an Extreme Heat Warning that remains in effect through 8 p.m. on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

The National Weather Service reported that high temperatures in the upper 90s, potentially reaching 100 degrees, are pushing heat indices into the 105 to 110-degree range this afternoon. A Heat Advisory is also in effect through 8 p.m. for areas west and south of a line stretching from Bethany to Columbia.

Relief is expected to arrive as a slow-moving cold front drops south across the region starting tonight and continuing through Wednesday, September 9, 2026. This front is expected to trigger the development of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Some of these storms, particularly from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday, could produce gusty winds and locally heavy rainfall.

By Thursday, September 10, 2026, temperatures are forecast to fall back into the 80s for most areas north of I-70, with cooler and more seasonal conditions expected area-wide. Residents are urged to take precautions during the extreme heat today, staying hydrated and limiting time spent outdoors until the cold front brings more temperate weather later this week.
