Kansas City, MO – A chilly Sunday morning across western Missouri and eastern Kansas will give way to sunshine and a significant warming trend, with temperatures expected to climb from the 30s early Oct. 18 to near 80 degrees by Thursday. Residents should prepare for patchy frost before several days of increasingly warm fall weather.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, temperatures Sunday morning will range from the middle 30s to lower 40s, with a 20% to 40% chance of patchy frost across parts of the region.
Sunday morning frost before afternoon sunshine
Despite the cold start, afternoon temperatures are forecast to recover into the middle 60s to near 70 degrees under sunny skies.
Kansas City is expected to reach approximately 67 degrees Sunday, while St. Joseph could reach 65. Chillicothe is forecast near 67 degrees, with Sedalia climbing to around 68.
Residents with sensitive outdoor plants should remain mindful of the early morning frost potential, particularly in colder rural and sheltered locations.
Temperatures climb toward 80 by Thursday
Monday, Oct. 19, will bring another seasonable afternoon, with Kansas City expected near 68 degrees.
A noticeable warming trend begins Tuesday as above normal temperatures return.
Kansas City could reach 70 degrees Tuesday, followed by 75 Wednesday and 79 Thursday.
Other communities may reach the lower 80s later in the week. Chillicothe and Leavenworth are forecast near 80 degrees Thursday, while Sedalia could reach 81 degrees Friday.
Overnight temperatures will also moderate, reducing the likelihood of additional frost as the week progresses.
Looking ahead toward Halloween
The warming trend fits the broader late October pattern highlighted in NOAA's Climate Prediction Center outlook for Oct. 25 31, which favors above normal temperatures across Missouri and Kansas.
However, that outlook does not provide a specific forecast for Halloween on Saturday, Oct. 31.
For now, the immediate weather story is Sunday's frost potential followed by a substantial warmup across the Kansas City region through the workweek.
