Kankakee, IL – The Salvation Army of Kankakee County is inviting residents to gather for its annual Thanksgiving meal Wednesday, November 18, while calling on local volunteers and donors to help make the holiday tradition possible for families and individuals facing hardship.
According to The Salvation Army, the community meal will take place from noon to 2 p.m. at the 360 Life Center, located at 148 N. Harrison Ave. in Kankakee.
Approximately 200 people attended last year's event, which provides a traditional Thanksgiving meal, fellowship and a welcoming environment for community members.
Volunteers and Food Donations Needed
Organizers are seeking help from individuals, families, businesses, churches and civic organizations.
Volunteer opportunities include preparing food, setting up, serving meals and cleaning up afterward.
Requested food donations include fully cooled turkeys, honey baked ham, pies, stuffing, dinner rolls, cooked greens, macaroni and cheese, canned corn, baked beans and mashed potatoes.
Financial contributions are also being accepted to support the event.
Community Support Especially Important This Year
Alvy Butler Jr., executive director of The Salvation Army 360 Life Center, said the annual gathering is especially meaningful following a challenging year for local residents.
"This has been a challenging year for many in our community, especially for those affected by the severe storms earlier this year," Butler said.
He emphasized that the meal is intended to remind neighbors they are not alone during difficult times.
The Thanksgiving gathering is part of The Salvation Army's year round work assisting Kankakee County residents experiencing financial hardship and other challenges.
Those interested in volunteering or donating food can register through the organization's online SignUpGenius page.
Financial donations may be mailed or delivered to The Salvation Army 360 Life Center at 148 N. Harrison Ave., Kankakee, IL 60901.
The meal is scheduled for November 18, one week before Thanksgiving Day.
