Kane County, IL – An Elgin man has been sentenced to 15 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections after a jury convicted him of aggravated kidnapping involving great bodily harm, prosecutors announced Monday.
According to the Kane County State's Attorney's Office, Judge John Barsanti sentenced Darnell L. Rhodes, 35, of Elgin , following his Aug. 13, 2025, conviction on the Class X felony charge.
Prosecutors said the crime occurred between March 13 and March 14, 2023. Rhodes, co defendant Roger A. Heaps and another man kidnapped and assaulted a woman they knew, according to facts presented in court.
Authorities said the woman was threatened with a knife, taken to a residence and confined after being bound with electrical cords.
During the kidnapping, prosecutors said the victim was stabbed in both legs and physically beaten. Her injuries included a nondisplaced rib fracture, a fractured finger, multiple stab wounds, bruising and blunt force injuries to her head and face.
The victim survived the attack and later participated in the criminal proceedings.
Rhodes must serve at least 85% of his 15 year sentence under Illinois law, according to prosecutors. He will receive credit for 1,283 days already served in the Kane County Jail.
Assistant State's Attorneys Mark Stajdohar and Matthew Pictor prosecuted the case. The State's Attorney's Office also recognized the victim for appearing at trial and thanked a victim advocate who assisted her during the case.
The sentencing was announced Monday, Sept. 28.
