AURORA, IL – A 24 year old Aurora man faces a minimum of 15 years in prison after a Kane County jury found him guilty of multiple felony offenses involving a loaded AK 47 style pistol and a controlled substance discovered during a traffic stop on Interstate 88.
According to Kane County State's Attorney Jamie L. Mosser, Tyree K. Pugh Cox, 24, was convicted of armed violence with a semiautomatic firearm, aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.
The charges include a Class X felony, a Class 2 felony and a Class 4 felony.
Prosecutors said the case began March 28, 2025, when a Kane County sheriff 's sergeant observed Pugh Cox following another vehicle too closely on I 88 near Route 47.
The sergeant also observed the vehicle hastily cross a striped median toward an exit ramp.
After stopping the vehicle on Finley Road, the officer noticed suspicious movements inside.
Through the rear windshield, the sergeant observed Pugh Cox passing a rifle style firearm to backseat passenger Marquese Reed.
Both men were detained after complying with instructions to exit the vehicle.
Investigators subsequently recovered a loaded Century Arms DRACO AK 47 pistol concealed inside a backpack on the rear floor.
Officers also discovered a Sprite bottle containing a medicinal smelling substance in the driver's door cup holder.
Testing later identified the substance as methorphan, a controlled substance.
Prosecutors said neither occupant possessed a valid Firearm Owner's Identification card or concealed carry license because both had previous felony convictions.
Following the jury's verdict, Judge David Kliment scheduled Pugh Cox's sentencing hearing for Nov. 19 at 1:30 p.m. at the Kane County Judicial Center.
Pugh Cox remains in custody at the Kane County Jail and faces a minimum sentence of 15 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
