Kane County, IL – Automated license plate reader cameras will be removed from a Kane County residential area after residents raised concerns about the technology and a local advisory board voted Monday to request their removal.
According to the Kane County Sheriff 's Office, the agency announced Tuesday that it will remove Flock automated license plate reader cameras, commonly known as ALPR cameras, following the vote by the Mill Creek SSA Advisory Board.
The sheriff's office did not specify in its Tuesday announcement how many cameras would be removed or provide a timetable for taking them down.
The decision follows community concerns about the cameras and how public safety technology is used in residential areas. The sheriff's office acknowledged that automated license plate readers can be effective tools for law enforcement but said community input is also an important consideration.
"The Sheriff's Office remains committed to using technology responsibly and in a manner consistent with the values of the communities it serves," the agency said in its Oct. 6 announcement.
Automated license plate reader systems capture information from passing vehicles, allowing law enforcement agencies to use plate data as part of investigations and other public safety efforts.
Tuesday's announcement represents a reversal for the cameras in the affected residential area following the Mill Creek board's request. The sheriff's office thanked Kane County residents for their continued engagement and input on public safety issues.
Additional details about when the cameras will be physically removed, and whether the decision could affect the use of similar cameras elsewhere in Kane County, were not included in the announcement.
