Joppatowne, MD – A 15 year old student at Joppatowne High School was taken into custody on Thursday, September 17, 2026, after allegedly being found in possession of a loaded handgun. The Harford County Sheriff ’s Office reported that the incident occurred while students were arriving on campus for the morning session.
According to the Sheriff's Office , the school's weapons detection system signaled the potential presence of a firearm. The School Safety Liaison immediately initiated a search, alerting the on scene School Resource Officer, who successfully detained the student. A subsequent search of the student's belongings uncovered the weapon.
The juvenile was transported to the Southern Precinct, where formal charges are currently being initiated. The Department of Juvenile Services has assumed oversight to determine the next steps in the legal process regarding the student's actions.
Harford County officials emphasized their ongoing partnership with the local school system to ensure a safe learning environment. They urged parents and community members to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately to staff or law enforcement.
