Atlantic City, New Jersey – Repeated high tides could flood coastal roads through at least Friday as onshore winds drive water toward the New Jersey coast.

According to the National Weather Service Philadelphia/Mount Holly office, prolonged onshore flow combined with the upcoming full moon will produce multiple rounds of tidal flooding. Minor to moderate coastal flooding is expected around high tides, with the threat potentially continuing into the weekend.

Minor coastal flooding is expected around high tide this evening. Water could cover some vulnerable roads and other low lying locations along the coast and tidal waterways.

The threat increases Wednesday afternoon through Thursday night, when minor to moderate coastal flooding is expected. The NWS said widespread roadway flooding could occur in coastal and tidal areas, along with impacts to some vulnerable structures. Some roads could become impassable.

The most significant impacts may occur in back bay communities, including Barnegat Bay and Shrewsbury River areas, as well as the Indian River Bay area in Delaware.

Coastal conditions will also become hazardous away from flooded roads. Winds could gust as high as 50 mph at the coast Wednesday. A high risk of rip currents is expected through Friday, while dangerous surf and significant beach erosion are also likely.

Residents in flood prone coastal communities should account for high tide cycles when planning travel and avoid roads covered by water. Beach visitors should heed local restrictions and stay out of dangerous surf.

Multiple rounds of tidal flooding remain possible through at least Friday. The NWS said impacts for the weekend should become clearer over the next 24 to 48 hours as the prolonged onshore flow continues.
