Isabel Pass, AK – A Winter Weather Advisory will take effect Wednesday afternoon in the eastern Alaska Range, where 6 to 11 inches of snow is expected around Isabel Pass.
According to the National Weather Service in Fairbanks, the advisory runs from 4 p.m. Wednesday through 10 p.m. Thursday. Periods of snow are expected through the rest of the week, with most snowfall generally light but periods of moderate to heavy snow expected beginning Wednesday.
The advisory covers the eastern Alaska Range, including Isabel Pass. NWS forecasts call for total snow accumulations of 6 to 11 inches during the main event.
A snowfall forecast issued Tuesday morning shows the heaviest 24 hour accumulations concentrated along higher terrain near and around the Isabel Pass corridor through 10 p.m. Thursday. Snow amounts vary considerably across the surrounding region, with lower totals outside the core mountain zone.
Travel conditions could become difficult as snow accumulates. The weather service said winter driving conditions are possible and advised motorists to slow down and maintain a safe following distance.
Snow will not necessarily end when the advisory expires. The NWS expects additional periods of snow Friday through Saturday, with another 1 to 3 inches possible during that period.
The advisory and snowfall graphics were issued Tuesday, Sept. 29, ahead of the expected deterioration in conditions Wednesday afternoon. The forecast applies specifically to the eastern Alaska Range and Isabel Pass rather than Alaska as a whole.
Drivers planning to cross Isabel Pass should monitor updated NWS forecasts and road conditions as the event approaches. The most significant accumulation is expected from Wednesday into Thursday, followed by lighter additional snowfall Friday and Saturday.
