Sioux Falls, SD – Summer like warmth across parts of the northern Plains will give way to a noticeable autumn cooldown this week, with temperatures reaching as high as 88 degrees Sunday, October 11, before a cold front brings cooler conditions and increasing rain chances by Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service NWS in Sioux Falls, unusually warm weather will continue across much of the region Sunday, with lingering warmth over northwestern Iowa Monday before temperatures return to more seasonable levels.
Sunday Temperatures Could Reach 88 Degrees
Afternoon highs Sunday are expected to range from 75 to 88 degrees across southeastern South Dakota, northwestern Iowa, southwestern Minnesota and northeastern Nebraska.
Western portions of the forecast area will be somewhat cooler, while eastern communities experience the warmest conditions.
Overnight lows will generally range from the 50s in the northwest to the 60s in the southeast.
Monday, October 12, will bring another mild day, although temperatures will begin falling across northwestern areas.
Highs Monday are expected to remain in the 70s across the northwest, while southeastern locations could still reach the 80s.
A few sprinkles are possible across northwestern communities.
Cold Front Brings Cooler Temperatures
By Tuesday, October 13, a cold front will bring more typical mid October conditions, with mostly sunny skies and highs ranging from 62 to 71 degrees.
Wednesday will remain cooler, with afternoon temperatures between 60 and 68 degrees. A few sprinkles are possible across southern portions of the region.
Rain Chances Increase Thursday
Another weather change arrives Thursday, October 15, with cooler temperatures and a chance of rain.
