FORT WAYNE, IN – Indiana residents could experience a warmer than normal winter in 2026 27, but that does not mean snowstorms and bitter cold are off the table. A new seasonal outlook released Friday points toward above normal temperatures across northern Indiana, with uncertainty surrounding how much rain and snow the region will receive.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, the December 2026 through February 2027 outlook favors warmer than average conditions as El Niño develops and strengthens across the Pacific Ocean.
The latest forecast gives Fort Wayne a 52% probability of above normal temperatures, compared with a 15% probability of below normal temperatures. South Bend faces similar odds, with a 53% chance of above normal temperatures and a 14% chance of below normal conditions.
However, precipitation remains much less certain.
Both Fort Wayne and South Bend have a 34% probability of near normal precipitation, with 33% probabilities for either above normal or below normal totals. Those figures include rain, snow and other forms of precipitation.
Forecasters emphasize that warmer seasonal averages do not eliminate the possibility of significant winter storms, dangerous wind chills or periods of accumulating snowfall.
El Niño could also influence winter conditions throughout the Midwest. The National Weather Service noted that the strong El Niño winter of 2015 16 brought above normal temperatures to both Fort Wayne and South Bend.
That winter also produced below normal snowfall in South Bend, although forecasters caution that no two El Niño winters are identical.
For northern Indiana communities, including areas near South Bend and Fort Wayne, the outlook offers an early indication of seasonal conditions rather than a prediction of individual storms.
Drivers and residents should continue preparing for winter weather, particularly during periods when freezing temperatures and precipitation could create hazardous travel conditions.
The bottom line: Winter 2026 27 currently favors warmer temperatures, but Indiana residents should not count on a snow free season.
