Jasper County, IN – Two off duty Indiana State Police troopers rescued a pregnant woman trapped inside an overturned vehicle Sunday afternoon along Interstate 65 near Roselawn, just before the wreckage caught fire and filled with smoke.
According to the Indiana State Police Lowell Post, Troopers Israel and Jordin Rosillo were traveling along I 65 on Sunday, Nov. 1, when they encountered a rollover crash near the Roselawn exit in northwest Indiana.
The troopers, who were off duty at the time, immediately stopped to help after discovering that a pregnant woman was trapped inside the overturned vehicle.
With the woman unable to escape on her own, the troopers climbed into the damaged vehicle and successfully pulled her to safety before the vehicle caught fire or smoke could overcome her.
The woman was transported to Franciscan Health Hospital in Crown Point for emergency medical treatment. Authorities did not immediately provide details about her condition or the condition of her unborn child.
Photographs shared by Indiana State Police showed the severely damaged vehicle resting upside down along the interstate, with thick white smoke rising from the wreckage.
The crash occurred near Roselawn in Jasper County, along a major interstate connecting northwest Indiana with the greater Chicago metropolitan region.
Indiana State Police highlighted the rescue as an example of the importance of its take home patrol vehicle program, which allows troopers to respond to emergencies even when they are not officially on duty.
The agency credited the troopers' quick actions with getting the woman out of immediate danger.
Additional information about what caused the rollover, whether other vehicles were involved or how long traffic was affected was not provided in the initial report.
