Jasper County, IN – A 42 year old Chicago woman faces multiple criminal charges after allegedly calling 911 on herself while driving intoxicated along Interstate 65 in northwest Indiana, leading to a traffic stop and an unusual encounter with a state trooper early Sunday.
According to the Indiana State Police Lowell Post, dispatchers received a call around 1:36 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, from Meisha Thomas, who allegedly sounded highly intoxicated and provided confusing information about her location.
Dispatchers tracked her vehicle traveling southbound near mile marker 240, close to the Lowell exit in Lake County.
Trooper Haddon subsequently located the vehicle in Jasper County, traveling between 30 and 50 mph in a posted 70 mph zone.
Police reported that Thomas allegedly swerved across lanes , forcing other motorists to brake and take evasive action.
After initially failing to stop, Thomas eventually pulled over in the interstate's left lane.
The trooper reported observing slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, poor coordination and the odor of alcohol.
During questioning, Thomas allegedly said she had left a casino in Gary and was returning home to Chicago.
Investigators determined she had traveled approximately 36 miles in the wrong direction for her intended destination.
The encounter reportedly escalated during her arrest.
According to state police, Thomas repeatedly made inappropriate sexual comments and allegedly attempted to kiss the trooper while he secured her seat belt.
Despite repeated instructions to stop, police said the behavior continued, resulting in an additional battery charge.
Authorities said Thomas was too impaired to safely complete field sobriety testing and refused Indiana's implied consent procedure. Investigators obtained a warrant for a blood draw at a local hospital.
Thomas was transported to the Jasper County Jail.
She faces preliminary charges of battery against a public safety official, a Level 6 felony; operating while intoxicated endangering a person; operating while intoxicated; and reckless driving.
The allegations have not been proven in court, and Thomas is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
