South Bend, Indiana – Fall begins Tuesday with highs in the 60s, breezy conditions and dangerous Lake Michigan waves creating a high swim risk.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, mostly cloudy and seasonably cool conditions will persist Tuesday into Wednesday. A few light showers will also be possible before drier weather takes hold.
Tuesday highs will range from 63 to 68 degrees across the region, with a 10% to 30% chance of precipitation. Temperatures fall to between 50 and 56 Tuesday night, when breezy conditions and a limited chance of showers continue.
The most significant safety concern Tuesday is along Lake Michigan. The Weather Service has designated a high swim risk for beaches in LaPorte County, Indiana, because dangerous waves and currents are expected.
Beachgoers should stay out of the water where hazardous conditions develop and check the latest beach information before heading to the lakeshore.
Wednesday remains cool and breezy, with highs from 62 to 67 degrees. Rain chances increase to between 20% and 40% along and east of Interstate 69, while other parts of northern Indiana remain mainly dry.
Conditions improve as the first week of astronomical fall progresses. The Weather Service expects cool and dry weather from Thursday through Saturday, with afternoon temperatures ranging from the upper 60s to near 70 degrees.
For residents away from Lake Michigan, the transition into fall will mainly mean cloudy skies, cool afternoons and a few light showers through Wednesday. Along the LaPorte County shoreline, however, dangerous waves and currents make Tuesday's high swim risk the immediate concern.
