South Bend, IN – The South Bend Police Department 's Violent Crimes Unit is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on the city's northeast side. The incident took place late on Saturday, September 19, 2026, when police responded to reports of a large fight in the 1300 block of Bissell Street.
According to investigators, the initial call regarding a disturbance was updated to a shooting call around 11:25 p.m. Upon arrival, officers located three individuals suffering from apparent gunshot wounds: 20 year old Alaya Maez, 18 year old Javon Hopper, and 22 year old Geimisha Broadnax. Each victim was provided immediate emergency attention by responders.
Tragically, Maez and Hopper were ultimately pronounced deceased at the scene or upon arrival at the medical facility. Broadnax remains at the hospital in critical condition. Police confirmed that the families of all victims have been notified regarding the tragic events.
Detectives from the Violent Crimes Unit are actively pursuing leads in this case. The department is asking for the public's help to resolve the investigation.
