Braidwood, IL – A tornado appeared over the cooling lake at the Braidwood nuclear power plant Wednesday afternoon, creating a dramatic sight near the Illinois facility before dissipating without reported damage.
According to the Braidwood Emergency Services and Disaster Agency, the National Weather Service analyzed multiple photos and videos before formally confirming the tornado, technically classified as an inland waterspout. Officials said it developed over the power plant& 39;s cooling lake at approximately 3:40 p.m. Wednesday.
Based on available evidence, the waterspout remained over the lake and did not cause damage. It has been assigned a preliminary EF 0 rating, the lowest rating on the Enhanced Fujita scale.
The Braidwood nuclear generating facility is in Will County, southwest of the Chicago metropolitan area.
Officials emphasized that atmospheric conditions Wednesday were favorable for funnel cloud development but did not support strong, damaging tornadoes.
Funnel clouds associated with these conditions typically extend only a few hundred feet downward from their parent cloud, rotate and then dissipate within several minutes. Most never reach the surface.
However, officials said that on rare occasions, a funnel can briefly reach the ground or water. That appears to be what happened at the Braidwood facility Wednesday.
Despite the unusual location of the tornado, authorities reported no damage associated with the event. The preliminary EF 0 classification is consistent with little or no observed damage.
The confirmation comes a day after the September 10 weather event, following the National Weather Service& 39;s review of visual evidence.
