Eastern Iowa and western Illinois face a windy start to Friday, followed by widespread frost concerns Saturday morning and a steady warmup that could push temperatures into the 70s by Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office, a strong weather system will bring showers and thunderstorms Thursday before colder Canadian air spreads across the region. The transition will produce gusty winds and a growing risk of freezing temperatures in some locations.
The agency's hazardous weather outlook, issued Wednesday, Oct. 14, identifies wind gusts reaching 40 mph from late Thursday night into Friday. Frost is expected Friday night across the forecast area, with a 20% to 30% probability of freezing temperatures, especially north of U.S. Highway 30.
The outlook covers portions of eastern Iowa, northwest and west central Illinois, and northeast Missouri, including communities throughout the Quad Cities region.
Frost Threat Follows Strong Winds Friday will bring a noticeable drop in temperatures following Thursday's rain.
In Davenport, temperatures are expected to reach only 55 degrees Friday afternoon, compared with Thursday's projected high of 64.
Breezy conditions will accompany the cooler air before winds diminish heading into Friday night.
Temperatures near Davenport are expected to fall to approximately 36 degrees, with areas of frost developing after 5 a.m. Saturday.
The National Weather Service expects frost to persist in some locations until approximately 8 a.m. Saturday.
While freezing temperatures are not guaranteed, the agency's 20% to 30% probability indicates that some communities, particularly north of Highway 30, could experience readings at or below 32 degrees.
Residents with sensitive outdoor plants may want to take precautions before Friday evening.
Weekend Sunshine Brings a Warmer Pattern The colder conditions will be relatively short lived.
Saturday afternoon should bring sunshine and temperatures near 59 degrees in Davenport, followed by a clear night with lows around 43.
By Sunday, afternoon temperatures are expected to climb to 67 degrees, with additional warming continuing into early next week.
Monday brings highs near 69 degrees before temperatures approach 73 Tuesday.
That represents an 18 degree increase from Friday's projected high in Davenport.
The broader NOAA outlook supports the arrival of colder Canadian air across the central United States late this week, although the specific temperatures and frost timing reflect the Quad Cities area forecast.
