La Paz, Mexico – Hurricane Polo is crossing the Gulf of California Tuesday morning after battering Baja California Sur, with dangerous winds, heavy rain and flooding now spreading toward mainland Mexico.
According to the National Hurricane Center, Polo had maximum sustained winds of 75 mph in a 5 a.m. MST intermediate advisory Tuesday. The hurricane was centered near 26.9 degrees north, 111.7 degrees west and moving northeast at about 10 mph .
The NHC said hurricane force winds were still affecting Baja California Sur early Tuesday, while hurricane and tropical storm conditions were expected to spread into mainland Mexico. Sonora is among the areas facing worsening conditions as Polo moves across the Gulf of California.
Heavy rainfall associated with Polo is expected across Baja California Sur and southern and central Sonora. Forecasters warned the rain could produce life threatening flooding and mudslides , especially across steep terrain.
A dangerous storm surge is also possible in areas experiencing onshore winds. Dangerous surf and rip currents are expected along portions of Baja California and Mexico's northwestern coast for at least the next day.
Polo's impacts may extend beyond Mexico. The NHC said tropical moisture from the hurricane will support heavy rainfall and a flooding threat across parts of the Southwestern United States and southern High Plains Tuesday into early Wednesday .
Even after Polo weakens, its midlevel remnants could generate strong, gusty winds across higher elevations of northwestern Mexico, southern New Mexico and far western Texas.
Residents across Sonora and other affected areas should continue following local emergency officials and the latest National Hurricane Center advisories as Polo moves inland.
