Hilo, HI – Hurricane Nolo is bringing dangerous weather to Hawaii Saturday, with tropical storm conditions already occurring on the Big Island and forecasters warning that heavy rain could trigger life threatening flooding and mudslides.
According to the National Hurricane Center's 5 a.m. HST Saturday advisory, Nolo was expected to remain south of the Big Island during the day before turning west and beginning to move away. Hurricane conditions remained possible in areas of steep terrain on the island.
Periods of heavy rainfall are expected to expand across the Big Island and eastern Maui through the weekend. Forecasters warned that significant, life threatening flooding and mudslides are possible, particularly across steep terrain in eastern and southern portions of the Big Island and Maui.
The NHC rainfall forecast indicates some areas of the Big Island could receive substantial rainfall, with isolated totals near 10 inches possible. Lower rainfall totals are forecast across the rest of Hawaii.
Coastal conditions are another major concern. Large and potentially damaging waves are expected along portions of the Big Island's coastline this weekend.
A Tropical Storm Watch is also in effect for Maui County, according to the hurricane center. Strong and gusty winds are expected across the Hawaiian Islands through the weekend regardless of Nolo's exact track.
Residents and visitors should closely follow National Weather Service and National Hurricane Center updates, particularly in flood prone areas. People should avoid flooded roads and stay away from dangerous surf as conditions evolve Saturday and Sunday.
