Researchers at Washington University identified gut microbiome signals that may predict necrotizing enterocolitis in premature infants up to eight days before symptoms. The study links bacterial infecting viruses and antibiotic resistance genes—not just bacteria themselves—to disease risk. The findings could give neonatal clinicians valuable time to intervene against a frequently fatal illness with few reliable early warning signs.
