Monroe County, GA – A Georgia traffic stop turned into a suspected prison smuggling investigation Sunday night after deputies discovered a drone, approximately three pounds of marijuana and ecstasy tablets inside an SUV, authorities announced Monday, October 12.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff 's Office, deputies stopped a vehicle around 9:27 p.m. Sunday, October 11, for a traffic violation. The driver was identified as Jamir Chisholm of Jonesboro, Georgia, in the Atlanta metropolitan area.
Investigators said Chisholm admitted to having a small amount of marijuana inside the vehicle.
Authorities reported that Chisholm fled the scene on foot while deputies searched the SUV. He was quickly apprehended.
A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered an unmanned aerial vehicle, commonly called a drone, approximately three pounds of marijuana, four ecstasy tablets and additional items investigators believe were connected to an attempted prison contraband delivery.
Deputies suspect the materials were intended for Coffee Correctional Facility in Nicholls, Georgia , located in Coffee County in the southeastern part of the state.
Authorities did not report that any drugs were successfully delivered to the prison.
Chisholm was taken to the Monroe County Jail, where the sheriff's office said he was being held without bond.
He faces charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of ecstasy, obstruction of an officer and possession of tools with intent to commit a crime.
The arrest comes amid growing concerns about attempts to use drones to transport prohibited items into Georgia correctional facilities.
Sheriff Brad Freeman said his office had recently arrested another individual allegedly attempting to bring contraband into a prison.
According to Freeman, the latest arrest brings the number of suspected prison contraband deliveries stopped by his office to at least five over the past several months.
The sheriff described the activity as an emerging problem within the prison system.
Investigators have not released additional details about the suspected delivery plan or whether other individuals were involved.
The charges remain allegations, and Chisholm is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
