El Paso, Texas – Several rounds of thunderstorms could trigger street, creek and river flooding from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in El Paso, a flood watch remains in effect across portions of southwest Texas and southern New Mexico. The heaviest rain potential is expected Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.
The watch covers western, eastern and central El Paso County, the Hueco Mountains and portions of the Rio Grande Valley extending into western Hudspeth County. Downtown El Paso, West El Paso, East and Northeast El Paso, Fort Bliss, Socorro, Fabens and Tornillo are among the locations included.
In New Mexico, the watch extends across the Las Cruces and Mesilla Valley area, Alamogordo, White Sands, Silver City, Deming and the Sacramento Mountains. Cloudcroft, Truth or Consequences, Hatch, Sunland Park and other communities are also included.
An early season backdoor cool front will interact with deep tropical moisture, producing several rounds of thunderstorms with torrential downpours. Repeated storms could concentrate over one or two areas, increasing rainfall totals there.
Excessive runoff could flood streets, low water crossings and poor drainage areas. Rivers, creeks and streams could rise out of their banks, and the Weather Service says extensive street, creek and river flooding is possible.
Drivers should be prepared for flooded low water crossings and rapidly changing road conditions. People in flood prone locations should monitor conditions and be ready to act if flooding develops or Flood Warnings are issued.
The flood watch begins Tuesday afternoon and continues through Wednesday evening, with Tuesday night into Wednesday morning expected to bring the greatest potential for heavy rain.
