Delta Township, MI – A reported handgun threat triggered a precautionary school lockdown and a multiagency police search Friday afternoon in Eaton County, near Lansing, before three juveniles were taken into custody.
According to the Eaton County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded around 2:15 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, to the 5600 block of West Saginaw Highway in Delta Township after receiving a report that three individuals riding a moped had threatened another person with a handgun.
A deputy later located the moped and three suspects near Snow Road and Michigan Avenue, close to Waverly High School, and attempted a traffic stop.
One juvenile was detained at the scene, but the other two allegedly fled on the moped.
Because of the suspects' proximity to the high school and the reported involvement of a firearm, Waverly Community Schools were placed on lockdown as a precaution.
Deputies subsequently located the moped near Waverly Road and St. Joseph Highway and established a perimeter to search for the remaining suspects.
Officers from the Lansing Police Department , Lansing Township Police Department, Potterville Police Department and Michigan State Police assisted in the response.
With assistance from a K 9 unit, authorities located both remaining juveniles and took them into custody.
The Sheriff's Office confirmed that all three suspects are juveniles and have been accounted for.
Officials said there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Authorities did not release the juveniles' identities, specify potential charges or confirm whether a handgun was recovered.
The case has been referred to the Sheriff's Office Detective Bureau for further investigation.
The Sheriff's Office thanked responding law enforcement agencies, Waverly Community Schools and Eaton County Dispatch for their cooperation during the incident.
The investigation remained ongoing as of Friday evening.
