Washington, DC – A strengthening coastal storm is expected to bring significant flooding, dangerous surf, strong winds and heavy rain to portions of the East Coast beginning Wednesday, with impacts potentially continuing through the weekend.
According to NOAA's Weather Prediction Center, a non tropical low pressure system is forecast to rapidly intensify well offshore of the Mid Atlantic coast from Wednesday night through Friday. The system is then expected to track toward southern New England this weekend.
Persistent, strong onshore winds combined with high surf and high astronomical tides could produce moderate to major coastal flooding, particularly around high tide from Wednesday through Friday. Coastal communities are being urged to monitor local National Weather Service forecasts and follow guidance from local officials.
High surf is also expected along many Mid Atlantic beaches during the middle and latter portions of the week. Forecasters said conditions could generate strong rip currents, beach erosion and possible property damage along vulnerable stretches of coastline.
Wind could become another concern. The Weather Prediction Center said gusts exceeding 45 mph are possible, along with the potential for scattered power outages. Some areas could experience even stronger gusts.
Heavy rain is forecast to spread northward as the system develops, potentially reaching southern New England from Friday into Sunday. Localized flooding could occur where the heaviest rainfall develops.
The coastal system is not currently described as tropical, but forecasters expect it to strengthen significantly. Residents and travelers from the Mid Atlantic into New England should closely monitor forecasts as details about rainfall, wind and coastal flooding become clearer.
