New York, NY – A rapidly intensifying nor'easter is expected to bring powerful winds, coastal flooding, dangerous surf and heavy rain to parts of the Eastern Seaboard through this weekend, federal forecasters warned Thursday.
According to the NOAA Weather Prediction Center , the storm will rapidly strengthen off the Mid Atlantic coast through Friday night before stalling near southern New England and Long Island this weekend and continuing into Monday.
Forecasters said persistent strong onshore winds, high surf and high astronomical tides could produce moderate to major coastal flooding , particularly around high tide. Coastal residents are being urged to monitor local National Weather Service forecasts and follow guidance from officials.
Large breaking waves are also expected to generate strong rip currents, beach erosion, road closures and possible property damage from the Carolinas through the Mid Atlantic and into southern New England.
Wind will become another major concern as the storm strengthens Friday. NOAA said gusts will rapidly increase and could exceed 50 mph Friday night into Saturday across eastern Long Island and southeastern New England.
Those winds could bring down trees and contribute to power outages.
Heavy rainfall could also lead to inland flooding, particularly across southern New England, from Friday through Monday.
The storm's effects will vary considerably by location, with coastal communities facing the greatest combination of flooding, surf and wind hazards. Travelers should monitor conditions before heading toward affected coastal areas this weekend.
Beachgoers should also pay close attention to local warnings as hazardous surf and strong rip currents persist.
