East Coast – Coastal communities from the Mid Atlantic into New England face several days of rough weather as a strengthening coastal storm brings a threat of flooding, high surf, strong winds and heavy rain through the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service, a non tropical low pressure system is rapidly intensifying offshore of the Mid Atlantic coast Wednesday. The system is expected to affect much of the Eastern Seaboard through Friday before tracking near southern New England this weekend.
Persistent, strong onshore winds combined with high surf and high astronomical tides could produce moderate to major coastal flooding in some locations, particularly around high tide.
The National Weather Service is also warning of strong rip currents, beach erosion and possible property damage from high surf. Water could remain trapped longer than usual in some bays and rivers because persistent onshore flow can prevent it from quickly receding.
Wind gusts near 45 mph are possible along portions of the Mid Atlantic coast into Friday, according to the agency. Residents near the coast are encouraged to secure loose outdoor furniture and decorations.
As the storm moves toward New England, the focus is expected to shift toward heavy rainfall. Southern New England could experience inland flooding from Friday through Sunday, with eastern Massachusetts among the areas facing a heavy rain risk.
Coastal residents should monitor local National Weather Service forecasts and warnings because flooding severity and timing will vary considerably by location and tide cycle.
