Elmhurst, IL – A 34 year old Chicago man has been arrested after credit cards were allegedly stolen from an occupied Elmhurst home and later used for unauthorized purchases, police announced Friday.
According to the Elmhurst Police Department , residents reported several credit cards stolen Sept. 14 from a single family home in the 500 block of South Hawthorne Avenue. Investigators believe an unknown suspect or suspects allegedly entered through an unlocked rear door around 3 a.m. and took the cards from a purse in the kitchen while residents were home.
The victims later received alerts indicating the cards had been used around 6 a.m. for unauthorized purchases in Chicago and Harwood Heights, police said. Detectives determined approximately $314 in purchases had allegedly been made at three gas stations.
Surveillance footage reportedly showed two men using the cards and leaving in a silver BMW SUV without displayed license plates.
Police said investigators used law enforcement databases, previous reports and automated license plate reader information to identify Michael A. Geigel, 34, of Chicago, as one of the men allegedly recorded making three unauthorized purchases.
Detectives arrested Geigel Sept. 29 in the 2600 block of South California Avenue in Chicago, according to police. He was charged with three counts of Class 3 felony identity theft and transported to the DuPage County Judicial Center for a first appearance.
Elmhurst detectives said the investigation remains active as they work to identify additional suspects allegedly involved.
Police also reminded residents to lock doors and secure their homes, even while inside.
Geigel is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
