Weld County, CO – The Weld County Sheriff’s Office is warning Colorado drivers about a growing scam involving “ghost cars” using cloned license plates to rack up toll fines.
The Scheme Authorities report that criminals are replicating license plate numbers and placing them on vehicles that match the make and model of the victim's car. These “ghost cars” then travel through toll roads, leaving the unsuspecting vehicle owner with the bill.
How to Protect Yourself The Sheriff’s Office advises residents to regularly check their toll road statements and report any suspicious charges immediately to the appropriate tolling authority. They also suggest monitoring vehicle records and keeping an eye on any notices received in the mail for toll violations that you do not recognize.
