Pueblo, Colorado – Fall begins Tuesday with rain increasing across southern Colorado before heavier downpours raise the risk of flash flooding Wednesday and Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, showers and thunderstorms will increase from south to north Tuesday before becoming widespread Wednesday and Thursday. The heaviest rainfall is expected across southern Colorado, particularly the San Juan Mountains.
Rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches are expected across parts of the southern region through early Friday. Local amounts around 3 inches are possible in the San Juans.
A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for the San Juan Mountain region from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday evening.
Locally heavy rainfall becomes an increasing concern from late Wednesday into Wednesday night. Residents and travelers in mountainous terrain should monitor conditions closely, particularly near flood prone locations.
Elsewhere, the Weather Service's precipitation map shows widespread totals of roughly 0.25 to 1 inch across much of southern Colorado. Areas around Pueblo are generally shown in the 0.25 to 0.5 inch range, while higher amounts are indicated west and southwest of the city.
Drivers should prepare for wet roads and reduced visibility during heavier showers and thunderstorms. Travelers heading toward the San Juan Mountains should pay particular attention to updated flood information Wednesday and Thursday.
The wet pattern coincides with Tuesday's start of astronomical fall. Temperatures will remain slightly cooler than average through the week before a slow warming trend develops over the weekend.
Scattered showers will linger from Friday into the weekend, but rainfall should become lighter, especially Saturday and Sunday. The greatest concern remains the potential for heavy rain and flash flooding in the San Juan Mountains from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday evening.
