Destin, FL – Hurricane and Storm Surge watches are in effect for coastal Okaloosa County as Isaias could bring life threatening storm surge, strong winds, heavy rain and a few tornadoes beginning Friday, Oct. 9.
According to the National Weather Service in Mobile, the watches include Destin, Eglin Air Force Base and Fort Walton Beach. A Hurricane Watch means hurricane force winds are possible somewhere in the area within 48 hours, while a Storm Surge Watch means life threatening inundation is possible.
The latest local forecast calls for sustained winds of 45 to 60 mph with gusts reaching 80 mph. Tropical storm force winds are possible from Friday afternoon through Saturday morning.
Accounting for typical uncertainty in Isaias’ track, size and intensity, the NWS identifies the potential for winds of 58 to 73 mph. Significant wind impacts could include damaged roofing or siding, downed trees, blocked roads and scattered power or communications outages.
Storm surge is another major concern. Forecasters say 4 to 7 feet of inundation above ground is possible somewhere within surge prone areas from Friday morning through Saturday morning. Deep coastal flooding, severe beach erosion and major damage to marinas, docks, boardwalks and piers are possible.
Rainfall totals of 4 to 8 inches are forecast, with locally higher amounts possible. The NWS assesses the rainfall threat as having the potential for major flooding, including rapidly rising waterways, flooded roads and possible evacuations or rescues.
The environment is also somewhat favorable for tornadoes, with a few tornadoes possible.
Residents should continue monitoring NWS Mobile and Okaloosa County emergency officials. Storm surge concerns could begin Friday morning, followed by tropical storm force winds Friday afternoon.
