Southport, NY – A 19 year old Elmira man is facing felony weapon charges following a law enforcement operation at an apartment complex in the Town of Southport earlier this week. Kyree Roney was taken into custody after investigators allegedly discovered two loaded handguns inside his residence at the Hopkins Place Apartments, located at 550 Spruce Street.
According to the Chemung County Sheriff 's Office, the incident occurred on September 17, 2026, when deputies were requested to assist the Chemung County Probation Department with a home visit. During the course of the check, probation officers and deputies reportedly located the weapons concealed within a small mechanical crawl space inside the apartment.
The handguns were recovered by investigators from the Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division, who were on the scene assisting the Probation Department. Following the discovery, Roney was arrested and charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, which is classified as a Class C felony under New York state law.
He was subsequently arraigned in the Town of Southport Court. Following his arraignment, Roney was remanded to the Chemung County Jail to await further court proceedings.
No other injuries or incidents were reported during the operation at the apartment complex. The Chemung County Sheriff's Office continues to manage the case as it moves through the local court system.
