WALDORF, MD – An 18 year old man is being held without bond after allegedly confronting a pedestrian at gunpoint, striking him in the head with a handgun and stealing his jacket and cellphone during a nighttime robbery in Southern Maryland.
According to the Charles County Sheriff 's Office, patrol officers responded to the October Place area of Waldorf at approximately 10:21 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, following a reported armed robbery.
Investigators said the victim was walking home when an unknown male approached and demanded his jacket.
When the victim hesitated, the suspect allegedly displayed a handgun and struck him in the head before repeating the demand.
The victim surrendered his jacket, but the confrontation did not end there.
Authorities said the suspect also stole the victim's cellphone and demanded the device's password.
The victim complied, and the suspect fled the area.
Emergency medical services treated the victim following the assault. The sheriff's office did not disclose the extent of his injuries.
During the investigation, officers discovered that the suspect allegedly transferred money from the victim's cellphone to his personal cash payment application.
Investigators were subsequently able to locate the stolen phone at a residence in Waldorf, where the suspect was positively identified.
Officers obtained a search warrant and recovered evidence allegedly connecting the suspect to the robbery.
Police identified the suspect as Mekhi Nathan, 18.
Nathan was arrested and charged with robbery, aggravated assault, weapons violations and other related offenses.
Authorities also reported that Nathan had an outstanding probation violation warrant connected to a previous conviction for illegal firearm possession and first degree assault.
On Friday, Oct. 9, a court ordered Nathan held without bond at the Charles County Detention Center.
The investigation remains ongoing.
