Kansas City, Missouri – Heavy thunderstorms could overwhelm roads and low lying areas across parts of the Central Plains through Sunday night, with the greatest flash flood concern centered on a corridor extending through parts of Kansas and Nebraska.
According to NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center, showers and thunderstorms are expected across the Central Plains and portions of the Northeast Sunday, with rainfall becoming heavy at times. The agency’s excessive rainfall outlook places the highest highlighted area under a Slight Risk, representing a 15% to 40% chance of rainfall exceeding flash flood guidance within 25 miles of a point.
A broader Marginal Risk, representing a 5% to 15% chance, extends across additional portions of the Plains. Drivers should watch for rapidly rising water on low lying roads and avoid attempting to cross flooded pavement.
The Northeast faces a separate threat. Parts of Maine and New Hampshire are highlighted for excessive rainfall, including a small Slight Risk area where heavier downpours could produce scattered flash flooding.
Residents in affected areas should keep weather alerts enabled through Sunday night and have multiple ways to receive warnings. NOAA urges drivers encountering flooded roads to turn around rather than enter the water.
Additional warnings could be issued where repeated thunderstorms produce the heaviest rainfall.
