Cassopolis, MI – A four legged member of the Cass County Sheriff 's Office in southwest Michigan will soon receive additional protection while serving the community, thanks to a charitable donation providing a bullet and stab resistant vest.
According to the Cass County Sheriff's Office, K9 Loki has been selected to receive a custom fitted protective vest through Vested Interest in K9s Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting law enforcement dogs across the United States.
The vest will be embroidered with the message, “In honor of K9 Roam, Colorado Springs, CO.”
Officials expect the protective equipment to arrive within approximately 10 weeks.
The donated vest is valued at $1,800 and is designed to provide additional protection against ballistic and stabbing threats that police dogs may encounter during law enforcement operations.
Vested Interest in K9s, established in 2009, is a nonprofit organization that provides protective equipment and assistance to law enforcement agencies nationwide.
Since its founding, the organization reports donating more than 6,710 protective vests, valued at approximately $6.9 million, to police K9 units in all 50 states.
The vests are manufactured in the United States, custom fitted and certified under applicable National Institute of Justice standards, according to the organization.
Each vest weighs approximately 4 to 5 pounds and includes a five year warranty.
The donation program serves certified law enforcement dogs at least 20 months old, including K9s whose existing protective vests have expired.
The organization estimates approximately 30,000 law enforcement K9s serve throughout the country.
Individuals interested in supporting the program can sponsor a vest with a $1,050 donation, while contributions of any amount are accepted.
Additional information is available at www.vik9s.org or by calling 508 824 6978.
For K9 Loki and the Cass County Sheriff's Office, the donation will provide another layer of protection during future assignments throughout southwest Michigan.
