Butler County, PA – Pennsylvania State Police are seeking new information in a 24 year old cold case involving two 15 year old boys found fatally injured on a rural road, with a $5,000 reward being offered for information that solves the case.
According to Pennsylvania State Police Tips, investigators with Troop D's Butler Criminal Investigation Assessment Unit and Major Case Team continue investigating the July 17, 2002, deaths of Scott Fosnaught and Shawn Baur in Forward Township, Butler County, north of Pittsburgh.
The teenagers were reportedly walking home from a friend's house around 1:30 a.m. when they were discovered lying on Cashdollar Road. A passing motorist spotted the boys and contacted 911.
Fosnaught was pronounced dead at the scene. Baur was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Investigators believe the teenagers may have been struck by one or more vehicles, but the exact circumstances remain unknown.
Several unusual details have complicated the investigation. According to the state police account, investigators found no skid marks or broken glass at the scene. Fosnaught's blood was also detected approximately 184 feet from where his body was discovered.
Although authorities have considered a possible hit and run, what happened to the teenagers has never been conclusively established.
More than two decades later, Pennsylvania State Police continue asking anyone with information to come forward.
A $5,000 reward is being offered for information that solves the case. State police say reward funds are not paid by taxpayers.
