Branch County, MI – A multi county theft investigation involving a stolen trailer, suspected livestock thefts and a firearm has led to the arrest of a 29 year old Detroit man, with additional felony weapons charges authorized Wednesday.
According to the Branch County Sheriff 's Office, detectives arrested Speed Miller, 29, on Monday, Oct. 12, in the Orchard Lake area north of Farmington Hills, following an investigation involving multiple law enforcement agencies.
The investigation began Aug. 29 after deputies responded to a stolen trailer report in the 300 block of South Stringtown Road in Algansee Township, near Coldwater in southern Michigan.
Detectives took over the case Sept. 21 and identified Miller as a suspect. Investigators subsequently executed multiple residential search warrants and obtained records from AT&T, Facebook and Instagram.
Authorities also learned Miller was wanted for questioning in other stolen trailer investigations and was suspected of involvement in livestock thefts across Michigan and neighboring states.
Investigators initially located Miller near his residence in Romulus, but authorities said he fled and evaded capture.
On Monday, Branch County detectives, assisted by the Metro Detroit Auto Theft Recovery Team, located Miller and took him into custody.
Miller was transported to the Branch County Jail and arraigned on a charge of larceny involving property valued between $1,000 and $2,000.
Following his arrest, detectives received information about a firearm allegedly connected to Miller at a residence in Algansee Township. Investigators recovered the weapon and developed probable cause for additional felony weapons charges, including a habitual offender enhancement.
The Branch County Prosecutor's Office authorized those additional charges Wednesday, Oct. 14.
The sheriff's office credited Michigan State Police, specialized auto theft investigators and the U.S. Secret Service for assisting with the investigation.
Miller is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
