Cleveland, TN – The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating after a male inmate at the Bradley County Jail experienced a medical emergency early Sunday and later died at a local hospital.
According to the Bradley County Sheriff 's Office, the medical emergency occurred during the early morning hours of Sunday, Sept. 20. The agency said on duty medical personnel and correctional staff immediately responded to assist the inmate.
Emergency medical personnel were called to the jail and subsequently transported the man to a local hospital for additional treatment. The sheriff's office said the inmate later died.
Authorities did not release the man's name, age or details about the medical emergency in Tuesday's announcement. Officials also did not provide a time of death or identify the hospital where he was treated.
The sheriff's office said the District Attorney's Office and Tennessee Bureau of Investigation were notified in accordance with standard protocol following the death.
The TBI is now investigating the cause of death, according to the sheriff's office. No determination about what caused the inmate's medical emergency or subsequent death was announced Tuesday.
The sheriff's office referred additional media inquiries concerning the investigation to the TBI.
No other injuries were reported in the announcement, and officials did not indicate whether foul play is suspected. The investigation remains ongoing as state investigators work to determine the circumstances surrounding the man's death.
