Augusta County, VA – Two Flock cameras that had been operating along Jefferson Highway have been removed after residents raised concerns about the technology and how information collected through the system could be used.
According to the Augusta County Sheriff 's Office, the two cameras were removed Friday, Sept. 25, after the agency received numerous calls and other communications from residents expressing concerns and uncertainty about their use.
Sheriff Donald L. Smith said in a statement that he listened to the concerns raised by Augusta County residents and decided to take the cameras out of operation while the sheriff's office continues reviewing the issues.
The statement did not specify how long the cameras had been operating on Jefferson Highway or whether they could eventually return.
Smith said the sheriff's office remains committed to protecting public safety while also respecting residents' privacy and rights. He said the agency's responsibility includes balancing community security with those concerns.
The decision comes as law enforcement agencies in communities across the country continue to evaluate how camera based technology is used and how information gathered through such systems is handled. In Augusta County, however, the sheriff's statement focused specifically on concerns raised by local residents and the decision to pause use of the two devices.
The sheriff's office said it will continue evaluating the technology and plans to provide additional information as that review proceeds.
For now, both cameras previously operating on Jefferson Highway have been removed from service, according to the sheriff's office.
