ASTOR, FL – Moderate flooding is occurring along the St. Johns River near Astor, where water levels are expected to rise further Saturday morning, Oct. 10, threatening low lying homes, roads and properties in portions of Lake and Volusia counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, the river has reached moderate flood stage following persistent northeast winds and repeated rounds of heavy rainfall across the basin.
As of 7:30 p.m. EDT Friday, the St. Johns River at Astor stood at 3.1 feet, above its official flood stage of 2.3 feet.
Forecasters expect the river to crest at 3.2 feet Saturday morning, with water levels remaining just above moderate flood stage through the weekend and into early next week.
At 3 feet, flooding can affect several residential streets and low lying properties near the river.
Water may approach or enter the lowest homes along Wildhog Road and nearby canals. Flooding also reaches the parking lot at Juno Trail Apartments and portions of Alligator Road and Holiday Road.
Additional impacts include flooded yards along Blue Creek, rising water on roads at Astor Landing Campground and Lake Dexter Boat Ramp, and water entering lower homes closest to the river along McPherson Lane.
The National Weather Service warns that elevated river levels could persist for several days, meaning flooding may continue even after the expected Saturday morning crest.
Motorists are urged not to drive around barricades or attempt to cross flooded roads. Residents should also use caution near riverbanks, where high water can create hazardous conditions.
The Flood Warning remains in effect until further notice, with no specific date provided for the river to fall below flood stage.
The next National Weather Service flood statement is scheduled for 11 a.m. EDT Saturday, Oct. 10.
Residents along the St. Johns River near Astor should prepare for continued moderate flooding through the weekend and monitor official updates as river levels remain elevated into early next week.
