Little Rock, Arkansas – Heat index values could reach 110 degrees across parts of Arkansas Sunday afternoon, making prolonged outdoor work and recreation a health risk as temperatures climb into the mid 90s to around 100 degrees statewide.
According to the National Weather Service in Little Rock, a Heat Advisory covers western, southwestern, south central and much of eastern Arkansas, where heat index readings of 105 to 110 degrees are expected Sunday afternoon. Forecasters said hot and humid conditions will continue through much of the workweek, and additional heat advisories will likely be needed.
Little Rock could reach 99 degrees Sunday. Fort Smith stands out at 102, while Brinkley could hit 100. De Queen, Texarkana and El Dorado also reach around 100 degrees. Russellville is expected near 98, Hot Springs near 96 and Pine Bluff near 98.
The combination of high temperatures and humidity increases the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Residents should limit strenuous activity during the hottest afternoon hours, drink water frequently and move into air conditioning when symptoms such as dizziness, nausea or weakness develop.
Workers should take frequent cooling breaks, and children or pets should never be left in parked vehicles.
The heat will not end with Sunday. High pressure is expected to keep Arkansas hot and humid through much of the workweek, with heat advisories potentially needed again in at least parts of the state.
