Phoenix, Arizona – Thunderstorms capable of producing wind gusts above 35 mph, heavy rain and blowing dust could reach Phoenix and other parts of south central Arizona before sunrise Monday, creating an early travel concern for drivers.
According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, isolated thunderstorms will favor higher terrain Sunday afternoon. An area of isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms could then develop across south central Arizona Monday morning, including Phoenix.
The main threats include frequent lightning, localized flooding, outflow wind gusts above 35 mph and localized blowing dust. Heavy rainfall could quickly create water on low lying roads, while dust generated by thunderstorm outflows could sharply reduce visibility.
Phoenix, Casa Grande and communities along Interstates 10 and 17 should monitor conditions before Monday morning travel. Drivers encountering blowing dust should avoid entering areas where visibility rapidly deteriorates. Never drive through flooded roadways.
Sunday afternoon activity will remain more focused on terrain favored areas, including portions of central and eastern Arizona. The storm opportunity expands toward the lower deserts overnight and before sunrise Monday.
Residents should secure lightweight outdoor objects and keep weather alerts enabled overnight. Storm development and exact impacts will vary by location, but Phoenix could face its more consequential period before and during the Monday morning commute.
