BAKER, FL – Moderate river flooding is forecast near Baker in northwest Florida and Elsanor in southwest Alabama this weekend, with additional Flood Warnings covering waterways near Crestview, Milton, Saraland and Barrineau Park.
According to the National Weather Service in Mobile, the Blackwater River near Baker is expected to crest at 16.4 feet early Sunday, Oct. 11, exceeding its 11 foot flood stage. The warning was upgraded from minor to moderate flooding and extended through Monday morning.
At 16 feet, residential flooding occurs downstream from the Highway 4 bridge. Flooding also affects Cotton Bridge Park, secondary roads and lowlands near the river. Kennedy and Peaden bridges are subject to flooding at lower river levels.
In Baldwin County, Alabama, the Styx River near Elsanor is forecast to reach 15.3 feet Saturday afternoon, above its 12 foot flood stage. At 14 feet, water reaches bulkheads along Donovan Circle in Seminole Landing and begins affecting areas near Goat Cooper and Waterworld roads.
Farther east, the Shoal River near Crestview is expected to crest at 10.7 feet Sunday evening, exceeding its 8 foot flood stage. Flooding could affect yards along Sowel Road and trailers north of the Okaloosa Correctional Institute.
Big Coldwater Creek near Milton is forecast to crest at 14.5 feet Sunday morning, above its 10 foot flood stage, with flooding of lowlands and some fish camps expected.
Additional minor flooding is forecast along Bayou Sara at Saraland, where water levels could reach 4.5 feet Saturday evening, and the Perdido River near Barrineau Park, where a 13.5 foot crest is expected Saturday evening.
At Barrineau Park, floodwaters could cover the roadway on the Florida side of the bridge and threaten parked travel trailers near the river.
The National Weather Service urges motorists not to drive around barricades or attempt to cross flooded roads.
