Washington, D.C. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Thursday that adult portable bed rails sold on Amazon by Loyoda Direct and Loyoda are being recalled after the agency found the products can trap users and pose a risk of serious injury or death.
According to the CPSC, the recalled bed rails fail to meet the mandatory federal standard for adult portable bed rails. The agency says users can become entrapped inside the rail or between the rail and the mattress, creating a risk of asphyxiation. The rails also lack adequate retention straps, increasing the risk that a user could fall, and have incorrectly sized push pins and push pin holes that can cause cuts or lacerations. Regulators added that the products do not bear required hazard warnings.
The recall covers portable bed rails sold under the Loyoda and Loyoda Direct seller names on Amazon. The CPSC did not provide model numbers, UPCs or date ranges in its announcement; consumers who purchased these rails are urged to stop using them immediately.
Affected consumers should contact the seller or manufacturer for instructions on returning the product and obtaining a refund or a replacement that complies with safety standards. Caregivers and facilities using portable bed rails for adults should evaluate current equipment and remove any recalled rails from service.
