Pine Bluff, AR – Arkansas State Police ASP Cold Case Unit agents and the Pine Bluff Police Department PBPD have announced a breakthrough in a decades old homicide investigation. On Monday, September 14, 2026, authorities took a 52 year old Jacksonville woman into custody in connection with the 1992 death of a newborn baby boy.
The suspect, identified as Stephanie Amos, was allegedly arrested without incident and charged with one count of Capital Murder. She is currently being held at the Jefferson County Detention Center without bond. The arrest marks a significant development in a case that began on June 22, 1992, when the remains of an infant were discovered in a ditch located in the 1000 block of South Mulberry Street in Pine Bluff.
An autopsy conducted at the time by the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory ASCL determined the infant suffered from craniocerebral trauma, and the death was officially ruled a homicide. Despite initial efforts, the investigation stalled for many years. In October 2025, the PBPD requested that the ASP Cold Case Unit review the evidence. Shortly thereafter, the ASCL confirmed that a DNA profile generated from the infant had been successfully entered into the Combined DNA Index System CODIS .
The DNA evidence eventually produced a hit linking the infant to Amos, who had previously lived in Pine Bluff and was already in the CODIS database due to prior felony convictions. Investigators submitted a comprehensive case file to the 11th West Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney's Office on June 17, 2026. Following a review of the evidence, prosecutors authorized the charges on July 29, 2026, leading to the issuance of the warrant that resulted in Monday's arrest.
