Little Rock, AR – Three words appearing in a winter weather warning could signal a storm far more dangerous than the snow and ice Arkansas residents typically experience. During the 2026 27 winter season, those words could carry an urgent message from Little Rock to Fayetteville, Fort Smith and Jonesboro.
According to NOAA's Weather Prediction Center, the National Weather Service is expanding the use of "Particularly Dangerous Situation," or PDS, wording in select Blizzard Warnings and Ice Storm Warnings this winter.
The wording is intended for rare, exceptionally dangerous storms threatening lives, transportation and critical infrastructure.
What Are the Three Words Arkansas Residents Should Know?
"Particularly Dangerous Situation" highlights extraordinary danger within an existing winter weather warning.
A Blizzard Warning already indicates strong winds and severely reduced visibility from falling or blowing snow. Adding PDS wording would emphasize an exceptional threat.
In an Ice Storm Warning, it could highlight potentially devastating ice accumulation.
Why Could This Matter Across Arkansas?
Arkansas faces several winter hazards, with freezing rain posing a particular concern.
Little Rock, Conway and central Arkansas can experience ice covered roads and bridges, while Fayetteville, Bentonville and other Northwest Arkansas communities face risks from snow, sleet and freezing rain.
Fort Smith, Russellville and communities along the Arkansas River Valley can also experience dangerous winter travel.
During an extreme event, Interstate 40 between Fort Smith and Little Rock, Interstate 30 between Little Rock and Texarkana, and Interstate 49 through Northwest Arkansas could become hazardous or impassable.
Heavy ice accumulation can bring down trees and power lines, potentially leaving homes without electricity or reliable heating.
These are possible impacts, not predictions of an approaching storm.
Is PDS a New Winter Weather Warning?
No. PDS is additional wording within certain existing Blizzard Warnings and Ice Storm Warnings, not a separate warning category.
Most Arkansas winter storms will not receive the designation.
What Should Arkansas Residents Do?
If PDS wording appears, residents should avoid unnecessary travel, follow emergency instructions and prepare for potentially prolonged disruptions.
The expanded terminology does not mean a catastrophic winter storm is currently forecast for Arkansas.
